Some guidelines to consider before going:

1. Expect traffic. Give yourself at least 3 hours before showtime.
2. Wear comfortable clothes and sneakers.
3. Bring plenty of water, sandwiches, raincoat, sweater, headache medication, flashlight.
4. Be aware of your surroundings especially your bag and pockets. Travel with your bag across your chest to keep pick pockets away.
5. Things may not be as organized as you expect. Keep calm.
6. Find a meeting place with your friends in case you end up not finding each other.
7. Have fun!

The marvelous city of Rio is all set to rock this weekend, starting September 23 until October 2.

GET TO KNOW THE ROCK CITY 2011 ON A VIRTUAL TOUR

The festival will occupy an area of 150,000 m2, in Barra da Tijuca, with a natural pond in the landscape and numerous attractions. Within the new Rock City, a complete infrastructure will offer comfort, safety and lots of fun.

Brazil is getting ready to welcome the Rock in Rio music back to town.

Final preparations are under way in the 37-acre (150,000 square meter) City of Rock, which has two stages, a New Orleans-themed jazz street and a 28-meter Ferris wheel in western Rio de Janeiro.

The music festival opens Friday with headliners including Elton John, Katy Perry and Rihanna.

Other artists in the lineup include Stevie Wonder, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Shakira and Coldplay.

The festival began in Rio de Janeiro in January 1985, but moved to Europe a decade ago.

More than 700,000 tickets have been sold for the festival, which runs until October 2.

With 28 meters tall, the giant ferris wheel of the Rock City offers a panoramic view of the entire region.

The festival, which started in 1984, was created to celebrate Brazil’s Independence Day. Since then, the event has grown and is now attracting over1.5 million people in 2010, according to official information from NYPD.

People come from all over the US as well as Europe, Asia, and Africa to join in this wonderful celebration. This event is now considered the world’s biggest Brazilian event outside of Brazil and one of the greatest ethnic events in the Big Apple.

The organizers of Brazilian Day,The Brasilians Newspaper, The Brazilian-American Cultural Center (BACC) and TV Globo Internacional, are expecting a record number of participants for the 27th celebration. It is estimated that there are over a million Brazilians throughout the USA. Of those, 300,000 live in the three-state area of New York, Connecticut and New Jersey. 100,000 alone live in the Borough of Queens, New York.

The Brazilian Day Festival is not simply a party, but an opportunity for the public to reach out to the Brazilian community in the US.

Instituto Kreatori houses an art gallery with a focus on Photography, rooms for courses, workshops and lectures. In addition to a multipurpose outdoor space for artistic events such as theater performances, literary and film releases.

Kreatori contribute to the promotion of culture, developing a bridge between cultural production and the market, focusing on the spread of cultural and artistic, with avant-garde artists.

Created by the artist Fabiano Cafure, Administrator Thiago Fraga and by Economist Felipe Dias, Kreatori develops projects, programs and practices in the areas of visual arts, photography, communication media and hybrid public policies related to access to culture.

Captured by smugglers when he was just a hatchling, a macaw named Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) never learned to fly and lives a happily domesticated life in Minnesota with his human friend, Linda. Blu is thought to be the last of his kind, but when word comes that Jewel (Anne Hathaway), a lone female, lives in Rio de Janeiro, Blu and Linda go to meet her. Animal smugglers kidnap the Blu and Jewel, but the birds soon escape and begin a perilous adventure back to freedom — and Linda.

Anne Hathaway hits the premiere of her new animated flick, Rio, at the Copacabana Palace Hotel on Tuesday, March 22, in Rio. The 28 year old actress was joined by her costars Jesse Eisenberg, Rodrigo Santoro, will.i.am, and Jamie Foxx.

Anne voices Jewel in the film, which centers around two birds from different backgrounds who go off on an adventure to Rio together. Anne also got to do some sightseeing and shopping with boyfriend Adam Shulman.

This is one movie the kids and I will be watching! Can’t wait for April 15!

Batuque das Meninas (“Girls’ Beat”) is a group of female percussionist. This street party will benefit the Associação Criança Repensar, that helps children with cleft lip and palate. Revelers are asked to donate a container of whole powder milk at the street party.

Kizomba is a great Carnival group. It is directed by singer Mart’nália and her siblings Martinho Filho and Analimar, children of famous songwriter and singer Martinho da Vila, who founded this group.

Where: Leblon – Posto 12, Leblon Beach
There’s nothing like Mulheres de Chico (Chico’s Women). The man in question is Brazilian songwriter Chico Buarque de Hollanda. The group’s musicians are all women and Chico Buarque fans.

4 p.m. - Sufridus de Copacabana
Where: Copacabana – Praça Manoel Campos da Paz
One of Rio’s newest group.

5 p.m. - Bafafa
Where: Ipanema – Posto 9
Bafafá does not walk the streets, but gathers around a stage by Posto 9 (Lifeguard Station 9), where the brass band from Cordão da Bola Preta plays one Carnival hit after another.

Where: Centro – Corner of Avenida Rio Branco and Avenida Presidente Vargas. This band has over 100 musicians, and plays a variety of styles. This group draws over half a million people so be ready to squeeze through the crowds.

10 a.m. - Conjunto Habitacional Barangal
Where: Ipanema – Posto 9 (Lifeguard Station 9), Avenida Vieira Souto
A group of people who spends a lot of time at Posto 9 decided to go out as a carnival group and the result is Barangal. Their songs are packed with double meaning, and their parade is energetic, safe and joined by beautiful local people.

10 a.m. - Galinha do Meio-Dia
Where: Arpoador
Imagine a street Carnival party at one of the city’s most scenic spots – with breakfast! This group, which parades in Copacabana on Fat Tuesday, will be out again on Sunday, March 13.

4 p.m. - Galinha do Meio-Dia
Where: Leblon - Starting in front of the Marina Palace Hotel on Avenida Delfim Moreira. The parade moves along the beach to Posto 9 in Ipanema.

5 p.m. – Caldo Beleza
Where: Flamengo – Praça Marinha do Brasil
A great parade. Caldo Beleza parades with a good percussion band, followed by lots of locals and tourists.

Old furnitures, which has no commercial value, are restored and given a new style and artistic value. Their work is unique and customized according to the daily lives of their clients working with aging, and revival of wood with sealer or wax. Paintings were inspired by playful surrealism and postmodern movements. The goal is to recycle your things into something modern with a unique style.
